Just thought I'd offer some information on yoga, in case anyone's been interested, but confused. Like Karate, there's different styles of yoga, sometimes with big differences. Asanas are the poses, pranayama is the art of breathing. Almost all forms of yoga will promote tranquility, balance, flexibility, and strength, but in different combinations
Ashtanga Yoga is a serious workout that includes maintaining tough asanas for various lengths of time which uses ujjayi breathing, which is like power breathing (loud and deep).Builds strength and balance.
Bikram Yoga is performed in a sauna, and while it's not as demanding as Ashtanga, it's certainly tiring. VERY cleansing and probably helps flexibility.
Iyengar focuses solely on asanas and their very precise details. Props are often used like blocks and belts and foam pads. Promotes good posture, balance and strength, although not as much of a workout as Ashtanga.
Sivananda is performed in a very relaxing tranquil manner, focuses on soft pranayama, meditation, positive thinking, and even proper diet. Promotes tranquility.
There are other styles as well of course, some that focus solely on the back, or other that seek to help certain conditions and ailments.
I find drop-in classes to be getting more and more expensive these days. They average about 12 bucks, which is retarded cuz I used to drop-in in Golden for like 3 bucks a pop. As is also true with martial arts, yoga can't be learned from a book, at least not initially. You miss out on all sorts of cool elements of a yoga class when you try to read it from a book. I'd suggest taking a few classes, and if you're still feeling motivated but lacking the money, THEN borrow a good book from the library. But it's tough to read a book when you're in a strange new posture and there's always so many little details.
