As you can see above, the proposed new voting system for BC would've changed a lot in the last election. On May 17, there will be a referendum where we get to decide whether to use the old system (first-past-the-post) or the new proposed alternative (single-transferable-vote). Every household in BC had a little booklet mailed to them (I got mine today), so take a look at it if you get the change. The basic premise is that STV will make sure that no ballot is waster. You get to number your choices in order of preference and if your first choice doesn't get enough votes, then your vote is transferred to your second choice and so on. I believe the new system is definitely a step in the right direction and will allow people to vote for the party they want (Green Party) not the party that has a chance (NDP). I'm quite excited because I think the green party will get a lot more support now that voters know it won't be a wasted vote. The new system won't take effect this election, because it will mean a whole new ball game. There'll be numerous candidates for each party in each district, so your first and second choice could still be the same party. Lots of benefits to this, but yeah, read the booklet and vote in the referendum. It's the cool thing to do....
